Hai Di Lao Yue (海底捞月) is a unique varietal that is grown in only one village in the Wu Dong mountains! Annual output is less than 60 kilograms for this varietal! It’s called “Hai Di Lao Yue” which means something like “Sea Fishing”. It’s called this because when brewing this tea only a small amount of tea is needed (much like the relationship of a single fish to the whole ocean!) to bring flavor and aroma to the water!

This varietal grows on Dayin Mountain near the Shenya Village in the Phoenix district of the Wu Dong mountains. Originally a cultivar from the Wu Yi area of Fujian this has been growing in the local area for more than a century. The tea plants from which our offering was harvested range in age from 40-100 years old and grow naturally without intervention.

Hai Di Lao Yue is a medium level of roast (for a Dan Cong) that was painstakingly charcoal roasted and then rested for a period of 3 months and then stored in clay urns (mostly airtight) until October of this year.

A unique Dan Cong with incredible flavor, aroma, and cha qi! Rare and beautiful!

Late-April Harvested tea

Elevation: 800 meters

Region: Shenya Village, Phoenix District, Guangdong

芝兰香 literally means “Zhi Lan Orchid Aroma”. Zhi Lan orchids are thick and sweet with an especially pungent aroma. This is a high mountain pluck from older trees (Lao Cong) growing at an altitude of 1200 meters.

The aroma when brewed at first reminds us of cured cannabis flowers and orchids. The taste is thick and pungent, with sweetness and little or no astringency. The tea has body and seems to expand in the mouth. The after-taste is noticeable and long with a soothing lubricating effect on the mouth and throat.

Ju Duo Zai is a rare varietal of Dan Cong Bush grown by just a few families in the Feng Huang (Phoenix) village area of Wu Dong Mountains. Ju Duo Zai is characterized by small-medium sized leaf, dark green appearance, with very large sawtooth edges. Ju Duo Zai is in fact the least grown varietal of Dan Cong.

After picking and processing into “mao cha” (lit. unfinished tea), the tea is roasted, stored and then roasted two more times at low temperature. This roasting is very gentle and you will notice that even though the dry tea leaves are black, when the tea is brewed the infused leaves are still mostly green in color. It is also called “Xing Ren Xiang” (Almond Aroma), although most Dan Cong processed into “Almond Aroma” style is not the Ju Duo Zai varietal.

The taste is sweet and fruity with a slight bitterness and no astringency. There is a slight roasted marshmallow sweetness and the tea lingers in the mouth and throat lubricating it even after you’ve completed your tea session.

Ji Long Kan is a unique varietal of tea that grows at medium altitude (900 meters) in the village of Zhong Ping (Feng Xi area). Ji Long Kan varietal (literally means “Chicken Cage”) is originally a Feng Huang Shui Xian varietal but naturally crossed with other tea trees and became distinctive. Ji Long Kan tea is grown only in Zhong Ping village, and the tea garden is comprised of trees that grow naturally, ranging from 60 to 400 years of age! The tallest and oldest tree is about 5 meters tall and 4 meters wide. Our Ji Long Kan is sourced from this garden and is a blend of several trees’ leaves.

Most importantly, the taste and experience of Ji Long Kan is both unique and elegant! The aroma is floral with notes of cream and stone fruit. The tea soup is thick and creamy, coating the tongue with it’s elixir-like essence!

The color of the finished tea is similar to that of a green snake, it is called Qingzhu Silk. The trees are the first batch of cuttings planted in 1976, growing in a tea garden in front of Zimaoan Jiao at an altitude of about 900 meters. The tea trees are classified under the Huang Zhi fragrance type.

High Mountain Spring Harvest (April) from nearly 50 year old tea trees! As soon as you open the bag you will notice a creamy milk-like aroma. The brewed tea is creamy, sweet and thick with a long lasting after-taste. It’s amazing to taste such an amazingly crafted tea that is so flavorful, but yet entirely natural with no additives. Very infusable tea that will go 10+ rounds brewed gong fu style. Strong cha qi with a very pure taste and feeling!

Ta Ku Hou village is a small village near Phoenix town just to the west at an altitude of 1350 meters. This is one of highest altitude villages in the Wu Dong mountainous area. Our Single Tree Ta Ku Hou Dan Cong is grown by one family and is from a single old tree that is more than $150 years old

The tea itself is medium leaf, dry leaf is dark in color and when brewed is typically green with some brown. The tea has been hand-picked and processed at each stage, and took more than a month of labor to complete. The taste is very vibrant and complex with notes of fruit and eucalyptus. There is a slight bitter which accentuates the fruity sweetness this tea delivers. It’s got a strong mouth-feel, cha qi and is very infusable.

A premium small-batch Dan Cong that imparts the depth and wisdom of this incredible tradition to those fortunate enough to try it.

1.5 kilograms in total!
