Hai Di Lao Yue (海底捞月) is a unique varietal that is grown in only one village in the Wu Dong mountains! Annual output is less than 60 kilograms for this varietal! It’s called “Hai Di Lao Yue” which means something like “Sea Fishing”. It’s called this because when brewing this tea only a small amount of tea is needed (much like the relationship of a single fish to the whole ocean!) to bring flavor and aroma to the water!

This varietal grows on Dayin Mountain near the Shenya Village in the Phoenix district of the Wu Dong mountains. Originally a cultivar from the Wu Yi area of Fujian this has been growing in the local area for more than a century. The tea plants from which our offering was harvested range in age from 40-100 years old and grow naturally without intervention.

Hai Di Lao Yue is a medium level of roast (for a Dan Cong) that was painstakingly charcoal roasted and then rested for a period of 3 months and then stored in clay urns (mostly airtight) until October of this year.

A unique Dan Cong with incredible flavor, aroma, and cha qi! Rare and beautiful!

This Dan Cong is crafted from 60 to 120 year Dan Cong trees growing in the middle-high elevation (1150 meters) of the Wu Dong mountains. The family harvests just 8 kilograms per season of this lovely tea from a small cluster of older trees. The is processed entirely by hand into a kind of greenish “mao cha”, then roasted carefully in clay jars, stored for a week and then roasted 2 more time, each time with a rest time. The tea despite being roasted still maintains some green character which infuses it’s sweet character. The roasted brown character brings some fruit and spice to the tea which really does remind one of cinnamon. There is also a really strong cream taste (nai xiang) present in this tea.

Incredibly complex and tasty tea!

Ma Tou Yan Rou Gui 马头岩肉桂 (lit. Horse Head Rock Cinnamon) is a unique varietal grown in the “Zheng Yan” Ma Tou Yan 马头岩 area of Wu Yi. Zheng Yan (正岩) refers to the innermost protected area of the Wu Yi Heritage site. It’s a protected area separate from the scenic area and outsiders are not allowed inside.

The “Zheng Yan Growing Area” refers to these tea gardens: tiānxīn yán/天心岩, mǎ tóu yán/马头岩, huìyuàn/慧苑, zhú kē/竹窠, bì shí/碧石, yànzi kē/燕子窠, jiǔlóng kē/九龙窠, yù cháyuán/御茶园, yù huā dòng/玉花洞, shuǐ lián dòng/水帘洞, fo guó/佛国, táohuā dòng/桃花洞, guìlín/桂林, sān yǎng fēng děng děng/三仰峰等等.

Ma Tou Yan area is 425 meters high. Rou Gui varietal has been grown here for over 100 years and many of the bushes are quite old. The mineral taste of the Zheng Yan area is present in this tea. The processing style is a medium-high level of roast done respectfully over several months time. The taste is silky and sweet… roast taste is there but not strong and will fade over a few months. Nice, thick body with a long lasting sweet cinnamon-like after-taste. Tea can be infused 7 to 10 times if brewed gong fu style.

If you are a fan of high end Wu Yi or Rou Gui in general this tea is a must-try!
