Ta Ku Hou village is a small village near Phoenix town just to the west at an altitude of 1350 meters. This is one of highest altitude villages in the Wu Dong mountainous area. Our Ta Ku Hou Dan Cong is grown by one family and is from a small crop harvested from their own small tea garden. The trees are between 60 and 120 years old and grow wild without intervention.

The tea itself is medium leaf, dry leaf is dark in color and when brewed is typically green with some brown. The tea has been hand-picked and processed at each stage, and took more than a month of labor to complete. The taste is very vibrant and complex with notes of fruit and eucalyptus. There is a slight bitter which accentuates the fruity sweetness this tea delivers. It’s got a strong mouth-feel, cha qi and is very infusable.

A premium small-batch Dan Cong that imparts the depth and wisdom of this incredible tradition to those fortunate enough to try it.

3.2 kilograms in total!

Jin Mu Dan (金牡丹/Gold Mudan Flower) is a unique Wu Yi varietal which was first introduced more than 4 decades ago. It’s a hybrid of Tie Guan Yin and Huang Jin Gui (but is not quite the same as Anxi’s Jin Guan Yin). This varietal has oval-shaped leaves, some purple characteristics in the leaf and bid and has a thick leaf which makes it appropriate for roasting.

Our Jin Mu Dan is a Spring Harvest (April-May) and has just been released after several months of roasting and resting. The roasting level is medium-heavy but because it was done “respectfully” in many stages with lower temperatures, the tea has retained its character and complexity.

The taste of this tea has notes of black coffee and cannabis in the front and then transforms quickly in the mouth to floral and sweet.Later infusions are very pleasant with a less pronounced bean taste and more sweetness.Further aging will only bring this tea close to perfection (as the roast taste transforms).

Very infusable tea that will easily go 10-15 steeps brewed gong fu style.A perfect tea for aging!

Our Mo Li Xiang Dan Cong (茉莉香/Jasmine Aroma) is harvested from a cluster of old bushes at an altitude of 810 meters in the Wu Dong mountains. It’s among the most premium and rare of any Dan Cong we have ever tried. Just under 500 grams in total was harvested this spring (first flush). We are offering 36 small canisters with just 13 grams each.

The taste is thick, full-bodied with many textured layers that stimulate the whole mouth and body! Floral, sweet, bitter (with a fast hui gan) and fruity! Although this is called “Jasmine Aroma” in Chinese there is NO use jasmine flowers or essences in this tea. It’s naturally quite floral. Last many steeps and imparts a delightful robust cha qi!

13 grams of tea in each ceramic canister!

Note: Due to the roasted nature of these teas we always recommend you consider purchasing last year’s harvest (when available), or purchase and hold to age for a year.

Origin of the Name: Jasmine Fragrance Single-Estate tea derives its name from its aroma. When brewed, it naturally exudes the fragrance of jasmine flowers, hence the name.

The tea trees that produce jasmine fragrance are grown in the Maoyixi area of Fengxi District at an elevation of approximately 810 meters. They were selected as single plants from the natural hybrid offspring of the Phoenix Water Narcissus population. These tea plants belong to the category of sexually propagated plants.

If single-estate teas are considered rare and precious, then Jasmine Fragrance Single-Estate tea is the jewel among them. Records in “Chinese Fenghuang Tea” and “Atlas of Chinese Fenghuang Tea” mention ancient tree Jasmine Fragrance Single-Estate teas in Maoyixi and Zhuliu.

Jasmine Fragrance Single-Estate tea is a “noble tea” within the single-estate tea category, known for its limited quantity and rarity.

Tea Tree Characteristics: The tea trees are approximately 150 years old, with a height of 3.4 meters and a semi-spreading canopy measuring 3.2×2.5 meters. They have eight main branches near the ground, and the branching density is relatively sparse. The leaves grow obliquely on the branches. The mature leaves are 10 centimeters long and 4.6 centimeters wide, elliptical in shape, smooth on the leaf surface, green in color, slightly inwardly folded, thick and firm in texture, and gradually taper towards the leaf tip. There are 10 pairs of lateral veins, and the leaf margins are finely and shallowly serrated, with 37 pairs of serrations. The leaf edges have a slight wavy pattern.

Quality Characteristics:

Appearance: Similar to most Phoenix Single-Estate teas, the tea leaves are tightly curled, dark brown, and glossy.

Aroma: The internal aroma is rich, with a distinct jasmine fragrance that captivates the senses.

Tea Infusion Color: Bright orange-yellow.

Taste: Sweet and smooth, with a rich and layered profile.

Tea Leaves: Thick, soft, and shiny, with a green center and red edges.

This “Yu Lan Xiang” (玉兰香) Dan Cong is from the middle mountain elevation (1150 meters) in Tou She village in the Wu Dong mountains in Northern Guangdong. “Yu Lan Xiang” means literally “Magnolia Aroma” and is a unique varietal that is native to Wu Dong area. Yu Lan Xiang varietal is a naturally occurring hybrid of several local Dan Cong varietals and grows mostly in the middle mountain area.

Spring Harvest notes: Spring picked Middle Mountain Dan Cong is typically harvested in early April! Our Spring Yu Lan Xiang is fresh, umami, bitter, and astringent, but also has a long lasting fruity sweetness and heady aroma. Like the winter harvest (also available), this a prominent sweet magnolia flower nectar aroma and taste!

Winter Harvest notes: Winter picked Dan Cong is typically picked and processed in Late-October into mid-November and carries a unique taste and feeling. Our winter harvested “Yu Lan Xiang” has a sweet magnolia nectar aroma and thick sweet floral taste that is countered by some vegetal bitterness, however the sweet floral character with a creamy taste/feeling dominates the palate.

Bai Ji Guan (aka White Cockscomb) is a classic Wu Yi varietal originating from the “Bat Cave” deep in the Wu Yi mountains. First recorded in the Ming Dynasty it was given this name because the tops of bushes have a bright yellow-green appearance that in strong sunlight is almost white in color.

Bai Ji Guan is lightly processed through shade withering and when brewed gives up a sweet mushroom and longan fruitiness that is very delightful. Cha Qi is noticeable but subtle and never overpowering.

This tea has been grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

Late April Harvest

Origin: Wu Yi Shan, Xingcun Town, Caodun Village
